Pyongyang's news agency described the upcoming war games, the world's largest computerized or simulated drill, as an "exercise for a large-scale nuclear war".

SMITH: Well, Anthony, from what I understand, Chinese state media said in an op-ed that if war breaks out between the USA and North Korea, that China should remain neutral.

Macron also spoke by phone with US President Donald Trump with the aim of "getting North Korea to conform to its worldwide obligations", his Elysee office said.

The North then came out with a threat to lob four intermediate-range "Hwasong-12" missiles near Guam, a tiny US territory some 3,200 kilometers (2,000 miles) from Pyongyang.

"The effect from North Korea-related jitters on financial and foreign exchange markets has been causing some global anxiety and we cannot rule out market volatility can widen from the smallest shock", Finance Minister Kim Dong-yeon said.

The Governor of Guam has defended President Donald Trump's hard-line rhetoric on North Korea and dictator Kim Jong-Un.

Tensions have increased as North Korea advanced toward being able to hit the mainland United States with a nuclear-armed missile. Still, he declined to say whether the US was considering a pre-emptive military strike, arguing that his administration never discusses such deliberations publicly. While Sen. John McCain is right to worry that making empty threats can embolden an adversary, President Trump does not appear on the verge of ordering a surgical strike against North Korean nuclear and missile sites.

"There must be no more war on the Korean peninsula. The North Koreans usually do something in terms of military development to cooincide with such events". North Koreans see the United States as the bully of the world (as does much of the planet), and Trump's posture simply adds to the image.

The president has gone out of his way to discuss the threat posed by North Korea, tweeting frequently and engaging reporters at length four times over two days in his golf club.

"The US has no interest in regime change or accelerated reunification of Korea". And we have to be clear that North Korea this week did not threaten to attack Guam.

The President also sought to reassure Americans of their own safety on Thursday, even as he issued another stark warning to North Korea.

He told Express.co.uk: "If what the USA did was to bring down the regime in North Korea there would be the question of who would replace it and who would pay for creating a North Korea that was more linked to the West, more linked to China, less isolationist - that would be very expensive".

For many years, the North Korean mission at the United Nations has provided a quiet avenue of communication for Washington and Pyongyang, away from the eyes of the media and irrespective of the bombast and rhetoric coming from the leaders of both countries. But Stephen Noerper, a Columbia University political science professor and senior director at the Korea Society, told the Wall Street Journal that with joint military exercises between the USA and South Korea set to begin next week, things could easily ramp up again.

"These statements are irresponsible and unsafe, and also senselessly provide a boon to domestic North Korean propaganda which has long sought to portray the United States as a threat to their people", read the letter which was spearheaded by Rep. John Conyers of Missouri.

It is one thing for North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to order the testing of intercontinental ballistic missiles, and quite another to threaten to strike Guam, a United States territory in the western Pacific Ocean.

"I am quite confident that he will continue to try to develop his missile programme, so it wouldn't surprise me if there was another missile test", Pompeo told "Fox News Sunday". "Should a second Korean War erupt, it will only lead to nuclear war".

Trump has called on China to pressure North Korea to halt its nuclear program.

Dunford is expected to meet South Korean President Moon Jae In and Song on an Asia trip that will also take him to China and Japan. The war veteran said "it must be noted that the combined allied militaries now possess the most precise, rehearsed and robust defensive...capabilities on Earth", adding that any arms race would be "grossly overmatched by ours".
