North Korea reportedly fires another missile
That's equal to the longest stretch that Pyongyang has gone since February without firing off a rocket.
This AP photo shows US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson speaking during a press conference at the Department of State in Washington on August 22, 2017.
South Korean security analyst Kim Dong-yub said Saturday that South Korea's assessments don't contradict US military evaluations that identified the launches as short-range ballistic missiles.
Kim was, as usual, accompanied by two of the key members of the country's nuclear development program, rocket scientist Kim Jong Sik and Jo Yong Won, a senior official of the ruling party.
What happens next is unclear.
The measures are aimed at disrupting the flow of cash funding North Korean weapons programmes, which are in violation of United Nations resolutions. "The U.S. Pacific Command determined the three ballistic missile launches from North Korea did not pose a threat to Guam".
White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said US President Donald Trump was aware of the launches.
Interestingly, the North has an arsenal of chemical and biological weapons, along with ballistic missiles.
"We confirmed there was no direct impact on our country's security". "Maybe the issue of hostile acts has to be addressed by something like a peace treaty".
"The reality vividly shows that the USA ambition for stifling the DPRK [North Korea] remains unchanged no matter how much water may flow under the bridge and the puppet group's ambition for invading the north remains unchanged", read the statement.
China on Friday criticised the economic sanctions imposed by Japan on some Chinese companies for their links with North Korea and warned of consequences if the decision was not withdrawn, media reports said.
After those talks collapsed, both sides have declined to talk until the other meets certain conditions.
The launch took place as the USA and South Korea carry out 11 days of joint military exercises, known as Ulchi Freedom Guardian (UFG), and follows weeks of angry rhetoric between Washington and Pyongyang.
China appears to have gotten the message, and they do not like it one bit. USA officials, for their part, are starting to give an indication that diplomacy is even a possibility. "A dialogue between South and North Korea must resume".
"It seems that North Korea is trying not to aggravate the situation", a presidential official said.
South Korea and the United States are conducting an annual military exercise this week involving computer simulations of a war. "It's still very hard to predict what Kim Jong Un's real calculation is". 27 days since the last North Korean missile test, signs are that tensions are slowly, but steadily, easing. The regime last tested a nuclear device in September 2016, the fifth since 2006.
"The United States must not forget for even one moment that it is confronting a nuclear-armed, intercontinental ballistic missile state".
Cho Won-cheol, emeritus professor of civil and environmental engineering of Yonsei University in Seoul, said there was always a problem with getting people involved in government preparations for a war few people believe will happen.
Saturday's missile launches were the latest provocation from Pyongyang since it tested two intercontinental ballistic missiles last month, and the first since tens of thousands of South Korean and USA troops kicked off joint military drills in the South last Monday.
The most anticipated phone of the year is here - Note8
Many experts thought that Samsung would end the Galaxy Note line altogether, but today's announcement proves that isn't the case. Interestingly, Samsung's recent Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 + flagships were launched with Flipkart as the exclusive online partner.
Abbas to meet with USA envoys on Thursday
The talks this week are aimed at helping forge a path to substantive peace negotiations, but no major breakthroughs are expected. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Trump advisors Jared Kushner and Jason Greenblatt in Tel Aviv Thursday.
Trump expected to increase US troops in Afghanistan
There will substantial pressure on the US to agree to an early resumption of "unconditional dialogue" with the Taliban. The British Empire three times attempted military takeovers of Afghanistan - twice in the 1800s and the last in 1918.
