North Korea fires 'several projectiles' into Sea of Japan

North Korea used a multiple-rocket launcher off its east coast on Saturday to fire three short-range missiles that could strike us military bases deep in South Korea, officials in Seoul said.

South Korea's Joint Chief of Staff said that the projectiles shot on Saturday flew 250 kilometers (155 miles) in a northeasterly direction.

This infuriated President Trump, which led to an announcement that the willing to fight with "fire and fury" if North Korea continues with their ballistics tests.

Faced with the escalating threat of imminent attack from an increasingly unstable and war-obsessed North Korea, Japan last week asked Washington for help in deploying the U.S. Aegis Ashore land-based missile defense system in a bid to shore up its defenses against a potential missile strike.

The latest launch coincides with an annual US and South Korea's annual military exercises, but at no time were the missiles a threat.

Kim was referring to the ongoing Ulchi-Freedom Guardian exercises, an annual joint military effort between the USA and South Korea created to practice their responses should Pyongyang attack.

The U.S. Pacific Command assessed that there were "three short-range ballistic missile launches", which either failed in flight or exploded.

Under President Donald Trump, the U.S. has become increasingly critical of what they see as China's limited actions in addressing North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons, particularly after the regime's ICBM test launches.

Washington and Seoul have said the joint exercises, which have taken place annually for more than 40 years, were a deterrent against North Korea's aggression.

China hit back this week against fresh North Korea-related sanctions by the United States, which targeted six Chinese firms and one individual for supporting Pyongyang's weapons programme.

Such drills, and others like them that have also involved Japan, have been a common point of anger for Kim and previous North Korean regimes.

North Korea had not launched any missiles since the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution imposing new sanctions against the rogue nation on August 5.

North Korea's last nuclear test came in September, CNN noted. "I respect the fact that he is starting to respect us", Trump said of Kim.

North Korea says that it views the military exercises as a dress rehearsal for war, whereas Seoul says the drills are about improving defensive military capabilities. This may be the pretext that North Korea uses to relentlessly and obsessively develop nuclear weapons in an effort to offset its weak military power.

Xi made the remarks in a congratulatory message sent to Moon on the 25th anniversary of the establishment of China-South Korea diplomatic relations, Xinhua news agency reported.

"The military is keeping a tight surveillance over the North to cope with further provocations", the South Korean defence ministry said. This development does not bode well for the prospect of the two countries being able to work amicably together on a solution to the North Korea crisis.
