Myanmar government evacuates 4000 non-Muslims from Rakhine state

Rohingya people escape fresh gunfire at the Bangladesh Myanmar frontier near Rakhine on Saturday

According to BGB Cox's Bazar 34 Battalion Commander Lt Col Manzurul Hasan Khan, 71 were sent back from Ukhia and Naikhyangchharhi.

"If we go there to our land, the army will kill us, so you better kill us here or you negotiate with them so that we can go back there", cried one Rohingya Muslim woman, Noor Begum, with a baby in her arms.

"Around 2,000 to 2,500 Rohingyas got into Bangladesh from Myanmar this evening [yesterday]", Md Zahangir Alam, chairman of Ghumdum Union Parishad, said yesterday.

The Nobel laureate has been accused by some Western critics of not speaking out on behalf of the long-persecuted minority, and also of defending the army's sweep after the October attacks.

When English took over as Prime Minister back in December, the profiles of him hit the usual beats: his closeness with John Key, his years as finance minister, his initial failed Prime Ministerial bid against Helen Clark.

Roshida Khatun, 40, crossed into Bangladesh on Saturday morning along with more than 30 other Rohingya.

The Vatican, confirming an earlier Reuters report, said on Monday he would visit Myanmar from Nov 27 to 30, stopping in Yangon and in the capital, Naypyitaw.

She reached Amtoli, a border village in Bangladesh's Bandarban district, at around 11 a.m. Saturday after a almost 40-hour journey. "But anything can happen at any time, so I can't say what will happen".

"We have entered Bangladesh to save our life", he added.

In February, Francis issued a stinging criticism of the treatment of Myanmar's Rohingya community, saying they had been tortured and killed simply because they wanted to keep their culture and Muslim faith.

But authorities there have refused to let a lot of them in, with thousands of people, mainly women and children, stranded along the "zero line" border zone. "The patrol in my area is not that tight often, especially during changing of shifts", he said.

Local Rohingya activists have reported higher death toll, but MWC News could not independently confirm the figures.

In desperate scenes, numerous Rohingya displaced on Friday have been left without shelter in no-man's land between the two countries, or forced to return to villages enveloped by clashes between militants and security forces. A United Nations report in February said the military crackdown on the Rohingya had led to gang rape, the killing of hundreds of civilians and the forced displacement of as many as 90,000 people.

Following her policy of "zero tolerance" towards violent extremism and terrorism of any form and manifestation, Bangladesh assured Myanmar of continued cooperation in dealing with these challenges. "We have done enough and sheltered hundreds of thousands despite our limited resources".

Rohingya are reviled and perceived as illegal immigrants in Buddhist-majority Myanmar, but they have lived in the country also called Burma for generations.

The report recommends that complaints regarding the verification process should be addressed swiftly by a government authority independent of the institutions which are responsible for the process, urging the community concerned to work with the government in the process.

Pope Francis will travel to Myanmar and Bangladesh later this year for a landmark visit set to focus global attention on the plight of the stateless Rohingya Muslim minority.
