Mexico reiterates refusal to pay for Donald Trump's wall

Donald Trump

Earlier this month, Trump threatened a government shutdown should Congress not allocate money to build the wall that Mexico has refused to fund.

President Trump's nominee for chief scientist of the Department of Agriculture might seem like an odd pick for the job. "He keeps his base intact and I don't believe he thinks there will be significant political ramifications because his base will be glad they're fighting against this evil Congress".

"Illegal immigration is significantly down", a source close to Mitch McConnell told me.

With his brash and no-holds-barred style, Mr. Trump could not be more different from Mr. McConnell, a calculating tactician who prefers to speak as little as possible. "The only people giving a platform to these hate groups is the media". He coupled it with a generalization of Mexican immigrants as rapists and worse. "We're going to get that wall", he said at the rally on Tuesday night. "You have a President who's at war with his own party and that's before you even get to the fact that you're going to have to compromise with Democrats on funding bills". At some point, he must accomplish something concrete for the American people. I mean, you're talking about big stuff. He can not accomplish the rest of his agenda without Congress. The hearing was held to discuss proposals that would split up the USA 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, a longtime target of Republicans who say the court has a liberal slant, a high caseload and distances that are too far for judges to travel.

If markets quiver over fears the debt ceiling won't be extended due to a prolonged funding stalemate, Duffy expects Trump will change his mind.

Now the president says that unless there's funding for the border wall in whatever budget measure Congress passes, he won't sign it.

Barack Obama assumed office with a thin resume and few accomplishments to his credit, but he managed to get important legislation passed to keep the country from slipping further into economic disaster amid a hard and lengthy recession. The other half of the time he's raving about himself: his legislative accomplishments, his efforts to boost the military and fight ISIS, the soaring stock market, and so on. As with most everything in his presidency, he is likely overplaying his hand. Trump has announced that he'd like to smash through the boulders with as much drama as possible.

He wouldn't be the first Republican official to conclude that taking responsibility for a government shutdown is more a matter of getting credit than shouldering blame.
