HBO hackers reportedly leak emails, demand money
08 Agosto 2017, 09:54 | Fidele Alvizo
The demand, which is not dated, gives HBO a deadline of three days to make the payment in order to stem the release of the stolen documents, some of which reportedly contain personal contact information for Game of Thrones actors.
The group who announced they hacked HBO last week have leaked new files from the company's servers, via private emails to the press and a website for everyone else.
A total of 1.5 terabytes of digital content was stolen by the hackers from HBO servers of which they've leaked about half terabytes. Also included in the cache is a month's worth of email from HBO's vice president for film programming, Leslie Cohen. Although the exact ransom amount hasn't been revealed, the hackers have asked the HBO management to release multi million dollars in Bitcoins, if it wants to save the entire data from being spilled online.
Monday's demands came in the form of a rambling ransom note scrolling on a video set to the Game of Thrones theme song, Wired reported. In its statement, the company said "we are investigating the incident and working with law enforcement and some cyber security firms".
HBO confirmed on July 31 it had experienced a cyber attack "which resulted in the compromise of proprietary information".
In the recent leak, they posted company's several internal documents, including emails, employment agreements, financial balance sheets, and more.
Moreover, the hackers have also delivered a video message to HBO CEO Richard Plepler and said that they've been able to breach HBO's networks after 6 months. Out of respect for HBO, we will not publish any of the information that can be found in those files, but rest assured, this is about as detailed as you can get without the actual episode turning up on line. In other words, no one knows yet if this is Sony Hack 2.0.
Given how the hackers will not shy away from releasing more data, whether or not HBO will crumble to their demands remains to be seen. The fact that new episodes from HBO shows Room 104 and Ballers started surfacing seemed to back up this claim. However, the network admitted that further leaks are likely to follow after the upcoming episodes for the "Game of Thrones" were leaked.
