Google fires engineer for anti-diversity memo

09 Agosto 2017, 08:51 | Bibiana Flor

A rant about diversity was shared by a Google engineer

He added that he was "currently exploring all possible legal remedies", and that before being fired, he had submitted a charge to the US National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) accusing Google upper management of trying to shame him into silence.

And yet, the values being espoused by the Google leadership in the heat of the spotlight cannot gloss over a problem that remains deeply set in the company's culture. A Google spokesperson declined to comment on the reports.

For years, I've thought that "Brave New World" was the clear winner in the dystopia prophesy contest, but the regressive left keeps reminding me to keep "1984" in the running.

Not enough has been done, the engineer said, to encourage a diversity of viewpoints and ideologies at Google.

Google condemned the post after it became public on Saturday. "It has been really toxic", one Googler told Recode. Damore confirmed to Breitbart that he was fired and said: "They just fired me for 'perpetuating gender stereotypes'".

"I wouldn't give this engineer anything more than a reality check", she said. "The main input to Google's performance review process, which is how they slot engineers, which determines pay - the main input to that is peer review", says Ellis.

But in terms of biological disadvantages it wasn't about stress. It also highlights a series of sexual harassment cases from various firms including Uber Technologies.

In the internal email, he wrote: "We need to stop assuming that gender gaps imply sexism". Pichai wrote in his mail. "I'm glad when I woke up this morning I wasn't the head of HR at Google", said Brian Kropp, who leads the human resources consulting practice at CEB.

Google quickly denounced the memo.

Perhaps more interestingly, the author does not appear to understand engineering.

"It's illegal to retaliate against an NLRB charge", he wrote in the email.

"I'd encourage each of you to make an effort over the coming days to reach out to those who might have different perspectives from your own". Pichai also said that certain parts of the memo violated the company's code of conduct.

The memo, which was shared company-wide, was seen by many as a criticism of Google diversity policies, although the author concluded his memo by calling for the company to treat people as individuals.

Pichai has also cut short his vacation and along with his leadership team, Pichai will be addressing Googlers on Thursday in a town hall meeting.
