Firing Mueller not mulled
08 Agosto 2017, 09:36 | Bibiana Flor
President Donald J. Trump is the 45th President of the United States
President Trump and his allies are pushing back against the deepening probe into allegations of collusion with Russian Federation, but the effectiveness of that strategy is in serious question even among Republicans.
Let me confess that the election of Donald Trump left me devastated.
Instead, he said, "the president continues to obsess about this investigation".
As new revelations on the Russian Federation probe emerge, the question now is: how long Trump can keep his discipline (hold his tongue and his tweets) and will he deviate from Thursday's message or stick to its confines?
Republican strategist Alice Stewart said on AC360 that the approach from Trump's lawyers was the correct one. The implication, of course, is that neither a grand jury nor a trial jury in the nation's capital would be fair to any Trump-related defendant in a case brought by Mueller. Trump is happiest firing people who get in his way. Their barometer for success was the reaction from conservatives like commentator Ann Coulter, who called the White House's embrace of the controversial legislation "the best moment of the Trump presidency since the inauguration". That won't please Trump, but it's the only way to go.
The man who taught me the most about the role of race in jury selection was my friend and colleague Johnnie Cochran, who would clearly have agreed with my point.
The Trump-Russia investigation and Mueller must be protected. He's fulminated that there should be a "red line" no one should cross. Someone might have very dirty hands, and I just want to know who. "Bob Mueller to anyone who knows him is Mr. Fairness with a capital "F", said Harry Litman, a former US attorney and deputy assistant attorney general under former President.
"The wording and the legislative history of 18 U.S.C. §§ 3332 (a) and 3333 (b)(1) indicate that a special grand jury should not investigate for the sole goal of writing a report; the report must emanate from the criminal investigation".
In fact, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein's letter appointing special counsel Robert Mueller does not give Mueller broad, far-reaching powers in this investigation.
He added that any such move would be "a violation".
Two months later, the Russian Federation probe looks much more serious-and Trump's lawyers appear to be treading much more carefully. Mueller was instead assigned to conduct the Russian Federation counterintelligence investigation. Kelly also got assurances that everyone in the administration would report to him, even Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump.
Let's just say that as a group, Trump's strongest supporters haven't exactly shown themselves to be models of calm deliberation and equanimity. Trump has repeatedly denied allegations of collusion, saying he is the victim of a political "witch hunt" and "fake news".
"The mandate Bob Mueller received has some broad language, including related to the type of language, which tends to open the door", Starr toldCNN, and it will be up to the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director to tell his team he's gone too far. All of this serves as a large-scale public performance of See, Everyone Is Biased, the reality show Trump is now selling with the goal of undermining law and truth, for everyone. And he managed to make his political case in a way that did not immediately dismember and detract from the arguments of his lawyers - a feat that he has not always achieved. Is it, too, now suspect as a grand juryvenue under Dershowitz's suspect grand jury test?
The poll also found support among white voters without a college degree-a key portion of Trump's base-have a dwindling view of the president's job performance.
In addition, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles Grassley of Iowa has said he will not hold any confirmation hearing on any hearing for an interim appointment of an attorney general if Trump should fire Sessions. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, and Cory Booker, D-New Jersey. What comes next is anyone's guess.
How 's that for media bias against this president?
