Farah thrills huge crowd with 10000m win
06 Agosto 2017, 06:03 | Cornelio Vivanco
London 2017 organisers have released a statement confirming that a number of teams had reported cases of gastroenteritis at their official hotel
Earlier, Usain Bolt took his first steps toward his hoped-for win in athletics' blue-riband event as he triumphed in his 100m heat in 10.07secs, but he was forced to work hard to qualify for the semi-final as only the eighth fastest.
Despite his injuries, Farah insists he is fit and itching to run in heats of the 5,000m on Wednesday as he attempts to double up at a major championships yet again.
Yet he proved himself equal to those physical and tactical challenges, his young son and three daughters joining him on the track afterwards as the celebrations rolled around the arena.
He still had six men for company down the backstretch, yet held his nerve and ultimately devastating kick to win in 26:49.53 - the fastest time in the world this year.
So can anyone break Farah's golden streak?
As he came out onto the track for the start Farah had gestured at the crowd for more noise, and he did so again as the contest began to develop.
Farah shrugged off continued doping allegations to mount a second defence of the 10,000m in London after victories in Moscow in 2013 and Beijing two years ago. Farah tripped twice in Rio, but on this occasion, there were no issues - only a sure-footed effort that displayed guile and stamina.
However, an hour after the race, though he required medical treament on his legs, he said he would not miss the 5,000m and the chance to complete a "triple double" at the world championships. It was not a smooth start and I have to get my start together.
It was not vintage - but it was good enough to get him (literally) over the line, with Dasaolu also making it through the first round heats.
"It wasn't an easy race".
"It was a special moment for me ... to have my family on the track, to let them do a lap of honour with me was a once in a lifetime moment".
"But what a way to end my career in London".
After the race, Cheptegei covered with all smiles on Friday asked; the assembled media: "you remember what happened in Kampala?" "It felt like me against the whole world, and it was, but at the same time they were working as a team". Is that all you got? Farah still had one of the toughest races of his life coming up - an all-out assault by the best African runners to wear him down to sap his finishing speed.
The 34-year-old, five years on from winning the 10,000m gold at the LondonOlympics, said: 'It was the greatest win. "He is a ruthless running machine". Gold in the 10,000 meters is at stake for Farah. "He's a true British sporting hero".
Farah's stunning victory not only made him the greatest, but also ensured that the fans, for a while, had forgotten that this was Usain Bolt's farewell championship.
Bolt's highly-anticipated appearance on the track for the 100m heats was far from one of his most convincing, the eight-time Olympic champion recovering from a poor start to win and advance to Saturday's semi-finals. This year, the 24 year-old has been nearly unstoppable, with even a broken hand not being enough to prevent her taking victory during a Diamond League race in Doha and could be set for a huge win in what would be her first ever major global final.
Cheptegei turned out the front runner posting a personal best of 26:49.94.
