Dustin Johnson Beats Jordan Spieth In First Hole Of Sudden-Death Play-Off

Dustin Johnson reflects on his second round one-under 69 at The Northern Trust

World Number One Dustin Johnson and Number Three Jordan Spieth put on a show worthy of the occasion at the Glen Oaks Club in NY, extra holes required to separate the two at the conclusion of a gripping final day. He executed that shot perfectly, and was left with a birdie putt of less than four feet.

Johnson was faced with a tough par putt on the 72nd hole with Spieth's ball marked just a couple of feet from the cup.

The two stars then headed back to the 18th tee box. It was the longest drive all week on No. 18, and it left him a 60-degree wedge that he nailed to within 4 feet for birdie and a victory he badly needed. 1 and 3 (Spieth would move to second in the world with his runner-up finish) mano a mano at a playoff event that is often overlooked as little more than an extension of the regular season. Johnson, 33, overall has 16 PGA Tour wins now.

Spieth added pars from the bunkers on the last two holes to join the others at 6-under 134. After kicking off in 69-65-64, the 24-year-old co-led after 36 holes and took a three-shot lead into R4.

Jon Rahm, who played with Johnson and Fowler, had a 68 and was two shots behind along with Justin Rose (68) and Russell Henley (72).

"I didn't lose this tournament", Spieth said.

Jordan Spieth enjoyed his enthralling battle with Dustin Johnson despite losing in a play-off at the Northern Trust on Sunday.

3 - Rory McIlroy finished in a tie for 34th, fully 15 shots behind Spieth and Johnson. "That last six-hole stretch, I played handsome golf". People noticed how Spieth seemed genuinely excited for Thomas when he caught up with him after his final hole, and Thomas has recently commented on how he was jealous of Spieth's success. He and Johsnon finished at 13-under 267. He took two steps of hope to the right, then pumped his fist in a rare show of emotion from the reserved player when it swirled around and dropped in the cup for 4-under 66 to force a playoff.

The win was Johnson's fourth of the year, but it was just his third top 10 since injuring himself before the Masters.

The win moves Johnson to top spot in the FedEx Cup rankings and in an ominous warning to the rest of the field he said he feels as confident in his game as he did before incurring a back injury on the eve of the Masters.

Johnson's victory on Sunday was a major comeback, with Spieth leading by three entering the day.

"But his body language was hanging in", Spieth said. I'm feeling really good. My initial thought was: "I just did that exact same thing to him the hole before".

Starting day three at Glen Oaks Club on Long Island sharing the lead, world No.1 Johnson and No.3 Spieth have moved to seven-under-par early on the front nine.

Spieth made three consecutive birdies starting at the 14th hole that led to four birdies and a 31 on the back nine, which he has found to his liking this week.

No one else really had a chance. "I love playing alternate-shot with DJ", he laughed. They tied for third, four shots behind.

Johnson stole the win from the clutches of the No.3 player in the world in NY to take out the first leg of the $US67 million FedEx Cup playoffs series.

Paul Casey, who may have his playoff run sidetracked due to his wife's pregnancy, posted a final-round one-over 71 to finish in solo fifth at six-under 274.
