For the year, the Dow is up 11.3 percent.

Apple's figures, which were to unveil its quarterly accounts after the close, were particularly expected. The iPhone maker's shares were up 0.25%.

The market rally slightly leveled out in the final weeks of July as traders engaged in the time-honored tradition of profit taking after a record run-up in US markets.

St. Louis Federal Reserve James Bullard is opposed to further US interest rate increases by the central bank and warned that more hikes could hinder domestic inflation from achieving the Fed's 2-percent goal, Market News International reported.

The Standard & Poor's 500 and Nasdaq Composite indices have also seen slight gains on Tuesday.

Shortly after trading began the Dow was up 59.38 points at 21,889.69, while the wider S&P 500 index rose 4.63 points to 2,476.73.

The business also recently declared a monthly dividend, which will be paid on Monday, August 14th.

Those results may reassure investors anxious about high valuations. Ahead of this, Wall Street is digesting June's personal consumption expenditure (PCE), which jumped 1.5% year-over-year, while consumer spending edged up 0.1% from May. At the time, the Dow was at 18,333.

"Equities are in an earnings-driven market, surprising to the upside", said Terry Sandven, chief equity strategist at U.S. Bank Wealth Management.

Japan's Nikkei rose just 0.3% as Tokyo equities were capped by lagging tech stocks. Economists polled by Reuters expected an addition of 185,000 jobs.

A key measure of inflation was flat in June for the second straight month, while the annual rate declined.

Under Armour slumped 10.4 per cent as it slashed its sales forecast due to weaker activity in North America.

Meanwhile, oil sank 3% on Tuesday after a six-day winning streak that took crude to two-month highs. The company posted its first quarterly profit in nearly three years.

Declining issues outnumbered advancers on the NYSE by 1,403 to 999.

USA technology companies fell Monday, dragging down the Nasdaq Composite Index.
