Chelsea have fined striker Diego Costa for his refusal to show up for pre-season training.
Costa, who scored a tally of 20 goals last season, helped Chelsea secure the Premier League title in Antonio Conte's debut season at the club.
Here, Press Association Sport provides a timeline of the events which have led to his exile.
Chelsea are expecting striker Diego Costa to return the club and train as per the terms of his contract, according to reports. "I was happy. When the manager does not want you, you have to go", Costa added. "He didn't train in the week because he wasn't fit".
Conte's sanguine post-match analysis was no doubt inspired by the ferocity of Chelsea's second-half comeback, first with 10 men after Cahill's 14th-minute dismissal and then nine after Fabregas collected a second yellow card.
Costa, has been away to his home town of Lagarto in Brazil. But speculation gathers of a return to Atletico Madrid. This idea (to move) is far from his mind. If they want to get into that top four consistently and do well in the Champions League - Everton in the Europa League - you could do a lot worse than Diego Costa. So, if they need to fine me, let them fine me. It was a tiny snippet of what it might be like to manage Costa on a daily basis. However, due to Atlético's transfer ban, they have been unable to make a move for their former star and must wait until January before they can make any new signings. I am not going to do that.
"I think the mistake was the so-called text that he [Conte] has apparently sent to him".
After the elation of winning of the Premier League at the first time of trying-and his fourth consecutive league title at club level-it's been a hard summer for Antonio Conte.
But Wright says he can not understand why Chelsea would want to get rid of a forward who scored 20 goals in 35 Premier League games to help the Blues win the Premier League last season. It is claimed Chelsea want £50m for the forward with Atletico offering around £28m.
With the World Cup in Russian Federation next summer, Costa needs to train regularly and play if he wants to make the Spain squad and it appears Chelsea are pushing Conte to give him another chance. The player and his agent, Jorge Mendes, were aware.
"Antonio Conte has told me by message that I do not follow at Chelsea and that's it. Conte said he did not count on me for next season", said Costa in June.
How long will Conte last at Chelsea.
Chelsea and Conte are tight-lipped on Costa as it emerges legal proceedings are taking place behind the scenes. They remain an interested party watching on as a struggle for power between player and employee continues.
