Dead, 1 Missing After Minnehaha Academy Explosion

Minnehaha Academy is a Christian private school in Minneapolis, Minnesota for students in preschool through 12th grade, and established in 1913.

The Minneapolis Fire Department initially tweeted a report of a fatality, but has since said that the fatality is not confirmed. Seven people were admitted to the hospital.

The spokesperson blamed the gas explosion on contractors working at the building. It destroyed the main stairwell and a group of classrooms for Years 9-12.

School officials announced the explosion Wednesday morning in a Facebook post, noting that emergency responders were on the scene.

Jeff Wagner, a WCCO reporter, tweeted that numerous mourners donned Minnehaha Academy clothes and colors as they bowed their heads in prayer and joined hands in song.

"It had to be a significant explosion that would take out that brick", Brian Tyner, Minneapolis fire's assistant chief of administration, said in a media update at the scene.

"We're going to get through it", said Minnehaha Academy President Donna Harris, who was injured in the explosion. It is still unknown that there were children or adults in the missing people.

Of the nine people injured, one was in critical condition and two were listed as satisfactory at Hennepin County Medical Center.

"I used to live in San Francisco and there are two types: one is a short quick one the other is a longer one it felt like the plates were shifting". A doctor described the injuries as fractures, cuts and head wounds; no one is being treated for burns. "Smoke went up and knocked most of us back. It was a bad tragedy".

"My office is in continuous contact with the City of Minneapolis and the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, as emergency personnel respond to this emergency".

Four of them remained hospitalized late Wednesday.

"We come here tonight to encourage one another and support one another", said Matthew Kennedy, lead pastor at Bethlehem Covenant Church. It's not clear why they were on the roof. At this time, it appears the explosion was due to a severed gas line.

"Parts of the ceiling sort of collapsed and things were falling", she said as she left the scene with a family friend who had gone to pick her up after practice.

Investigators suspect natural gas caused the explosion.

"We will conduct an investigation to determine the cause", she added.

Residents near the area say they could feel the explosion.

Day said before they knew it, they were surrounded by debris.
