Moeen Ali may have taken 25 wickets in an outstanding series triumph over South Africa but he insists that spinning is still his second suit.

It was England's second successive series win over South Africa after winning in South Africa 18 months ago, but broke a near two-decade drought on English soil.

Root fully underlines that, saying: "Moeen has put in some unbelievable performances to win games for us in this series and hopefully that can be something that can be repeated on a number of occasions in the future".

Anderson, from the Statham End rather than his own, also soon had Kagiso Rabada driving on the up to cover - before Moeen made the shortest work of numbers 10 and 11 Morne Morkel and Duanne Olivier, in successive balls.

Having won by 211 runs in the opener at Lord's, England responded to the defeat in Nottingham - and questions over Root's young leadership - with dominant victories at The Oval and Old Trafford.

Bairstow's brilliant batting with the tailenders, and Anderson's important haul at his home ground, set England up for a big first-innings lead and a dominant position in the series-ender at Old Trafford. "I contributed with the bat a couple of times", Moeen told BBC Radio's Test Match Special. "I see it more like that, not really a pressure thing". He found success with the stroke going past the boundary and immediately followed it up with three delightful shots in the next over bowled by Toby Roland-Jones.

In conditions more suited to batting than on day one, South Africa struggled to counter England's attack - Anderson setting the tone by striking with his third delivery. Great pitch to bowl on, especially today, landing it in a good area you get the reward.

The game will resume with neither side decisively ahead, but there is intrigue off the field too after England's bowling coach emerged as a candidate for the top job in the away dressing room.

The only real resistance came from Hashim Amla (83) and skipper Faf du Plessis (61), who put on a 123-run fourth-wicket partnership.

Ali was not done with Amla's scalp and in the very next over he had the unsafe Quinton de Kock and Theunis de Bruyn edging to the slips as he made full use of the rough on the Old Trafford pitch.

The 33-year-old said England would have an even better chance of succeeding if the wickets provide some assistance to the quicker bowlers.

This summer has been some creative groundsmanship which has ensured that three of the four Tests ended with at least one day to spare, and only three individual centuries were scored, but still...

But with South Africa 163-3, Amla missed an intended whip shot off Moeen and was lbw, although England, for the second time on Monday, had to first review umpire Kumar Dharmasena's original not out decision.
