Coutinho did not feature in the Reds' last pre-season friendly against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday due to a sore back and remains a doubt for the trip to Watford.

The Reds are believed to have rejected an initial bid of £72 million, last month, with Jurgen Klopp informing the La Liga giants that they were wasting their energy trying to land the Brazilian as a replacement for Neymar.

Liverpool have rejected another bid from Barcelona for midfielder Philippe Coutinho just days out from the start of the English Premier League. Even in the best case scenario, he is unlikely to play a significant role in either of the club's first two league games or in their Champions League playoff.

Klopp rarely goes out of his way to squash rumors like this, usually he chuckles and says something to the effect of "no comment" except his way of saying "no comment" is funny and endearing and unique. Yeah, I'm sure there's players who can influence the football as much as Coutinho. He has improved a lot since I've been here and he can still improve a lot. "We are not in that situation".

The German coach has been keen on bringing Virgil van Dijk to Anfield from Southampton during this transfer window, with the Merseyside club reportedly willing to pay £60 million.

Coutinho is attracted by a move to Barcelona but will not force through a transfer because he would prefer an amicable exit from Liverpool. The player joined Liverpool from Inter Milan in 2013, and since then he has become a vital member of the club's attacking force.

"Liverpool is not a club that has to sell players".

Nathaniel Clyne is also absent as the right back has missed the entirety of Liverpool's pre-season programme.

The Spanish side saw their second bid for the 25-year-old turned down on Wednesday evening, with the Reds holding firm on their stance that Coutinho is not for sale.
