Amazon expected to slash prices at Whole Foods starting Monday

Amazon is moving swiftly to make changes at Whole Foods having completed its $13.7 billion takeover of the organic grocer

Whole Foods occupies a very small share of market in the USA grocery segment, holding less than 2%. Their top quality food products are often said to be pricey.

The mechanics of the change are simple: Amazon has a huge supply chain that can streamline delivery like few others. The news concerned most players in this industry as Amazon is known for aggressive strategies and vast expertise in marketing and logistics.

The downtown Los Angeles Ralphs was selling conventional avocados for $1.99, versus $1.49 at Whole Foods.

So it absolutely makes sense for Amazon to push Whole Foods in that direction, but the fight between Walmart and Amazon is only going to put every body else in the market under an even tighter squeeze.

That's the kind of interest Whole Foods and Amazon are trying to generate.

Starting Monday, Whole Foods will cut prices on certain "best-selling staples", including "Whole Trade organic bananas", "responsibly-farmed salmon", and organic large brown eggs, Jeff Wilke, chief executive of Amazon Worldwide Consumer, said in a statement Thursday. So feel free to stock up on back-to-school basics at Whole Foods because at least this year, your wallet won't feel as empty as your stomach.

Google and Amazon certainly made interesting choices.

But Walmart's shares were off 2 percent, and shares of other big grocery businesses fell more. Amazon has always had a steep focus on spending and investing in research and development and keeping operating margins razor-thin.

Tens of millions of people subscribe to Amazon Prime. Customers could one day use the Amazon's popular voice-activated home speaker products to buy Whole Foods goods. Now it has over 200 new locations to fulfill orders from.

Whole Foods has been taken over by Amazon and customers will see some lower prices right away. NPR quotes an information expert, Professor Lee McKnight of Syracuse University.

Whole Foods Market will continue to grow its team and create jobs in local communities as it opens new stores, hires new team members, and expands its support of local farmers and artisans. Items like organic milk are something the couple will now be shopping for at Whole Foods.

Whole Foods' crafted an ethos built around supporting local communities, environmental stewardship and what the chain calls "win-win partnerships" with its suppliers.

As time goes on, it appears that Amazon and Walmart will be the two big winners in the ongoing supermarket wars. David West, executive director of Puget Sound Sage, explained to Business Weekly.

The Seattle-based internet retailer has not produced a comprehensive list of rollback products or indicated how deeply items will be discounted, but some have already reported the discounts be as high as 43 percent.
