Trump says he and Macron talked trade, military

Like he's done with many other women, President Donald Trump commented on the physical appearance of French President Emmanuel Macron's wife Brigitte.

Friday marks 228 years since the storming of the Bastille prison in Paris, just days into the 1789 French Revolution.

"It was spectacular", NPR's Eleanor Beardsley tells Morning Edition.

President Donald Trump has saluted as US troops pass during the French Bastille Day parade commemorating the 100th anniversary of the American entry into World War I.

The whole excruciating interaction may signal that when it comes to Trump's alpha-male handshakes, world leaders are coming prepared to fight.

Macron closed the show with brief remarks as Trump stood alongside him.

The political strategy of the newly elected President of France, Emmanuel Macron, seems to be the most intelligent way to handle a counterpart whose positions are radically different, and which is not entirely welcome in Europe.

Brigitte Trogneux is 64 while her husband, the president is 39.

Even from a distance, the president could be seen eagerly leaning forward in his seat of honour and gesturing to his wife or Mr Macron as each new spectacle came forth.

It's not the first time a handshake between the two world leaders raised eyebrows.

"The latest handshake that was seen around the world lasted almost 30 seconds", the anchor continued as a clock graphic counted the seconds of the handshake. "You're in such good shape", he first said to Brigitte.

President Emmanuel Macron and Donald Trump marked France s national day together on Friday at a military parade which clearly delighted the United States leader and showcased warming relations between the two men. But if flattering Mr. Trump is the prix à payer for getting what he wants out of him, one senses Mr. Macron considers it a bargain.

It is not the first time Trump has hit the headlines for his dominating grip.

Trump touched down in Paris sporting a traditional red Christian Dior. "We'll see what happens".

The 2017 U.S. Women's Open may be of particular interest to Trump, as it's being held on one of his courses, Trump National Golf Club, in Bedminster. Thought that would be the low point of the France visit? But if his plan was to strengthen France's ties to the US, it seems to have worked. When he withdrew from the climate deal that was named for the city, he famously said, "I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris". The French president "may have copied the American president's monopoly on being unpredictable ... but [he wants] to become the European leader of the global political scene, and to achieve this he'll have to go beyond images and symbols".

"So I was asked to go by the President, who I get along with very well".

"And you're always welcome", Macron said.
