Donald Trump's Presidency

President Trump tweeted this afternoon that he has named a new chief of staff. Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly now takes that job.

Priebus was being attacked by Trump advocates for his failure of helping get legislation passed including the Obamacare repeal and replacement legislation, which continues to be stalled.

Mr Priebus' loyalty had been in doubt by Mr Trump ever since he urged the then-candidate to drop out of the presidential race when a 2005 video of Mr Trump bragging about sexual harassment became public. I want to thank the President for giving me this very special opportunity. "I think it's a good time to hit the reset button ... it's something I think the White House needs and I support him", Priebus told CNN.

Brad Gerstman, a NY lobbyist and public relations executive, said it probably doesn't matter to Trump that Scaramucci and Priebus don't get along.

The move followed months of on-again, off-again speculation that Priebus would soon be ousted from an administration where he has consistently drawn heavy criticism for failing to stem the flow of leaks and struggled to impose a sense of order in a chaotic White House beset by controversies.

Scaramucci was convinced that Priebus was behind a series of high-profile leaks affecting him and Trump.

"I don't know if this is repairable or not - that will be up to the president", Scaramucci said on air.

General John Kelly is a lot like Donald Trump. Done an incredible job thus far. "He's a great American".

Jeff Kaufmann, the Iowa Republican chairman and a vocal Trump supporter, said he'd "certainly felt comfortable" with Priebus as chief of staff. Priebus was on the plane with him and left with no comment.

"They've got all these chiefs running about with or without the title of chief", said William Daley, the second chief of staff for President Barack Obama. Other RNC allies brought aboard included Spicer and Kate Walsh, who became deputy White House chief of staff. Walsh is now gone, and Spicer is on his way out. Those questions sharply escalated this week with the arrival of Scaramucci, the hard-charging communications director who was hired over Priebus's objections. This story was updated with Trump's remarks to reporters.

Priebus resigned privately Thursday, according to media reports.

Shortly after, Scaramucci tweeted that his personal financial disclosure information had been illegally leaked, and that he was calling on the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Department of Justice to investigate.

"Mr. President, it is time to look in the mirror, accept responsibility, apologize to the American people, and declare an end to this behavior immediately", Vander Plaats wrote. He has achieved so much, and he has done it all with class.

Donald Trump, like many a businessman-turned-politician before him, argued that if he was elected, he would bring his managerial acumen to Washington, making government run like a business with efficiency and skill.

Kelly acknowledges that when he took over DHS, his department was created to be less responsive to Congress and the press, something he realized over time he should work to correct. That concerns House Homeland Security Committee Ranking Member Bennie Thompson (D-MS), who told CBS News the president's decision was "rushed" and "not well thought out".

"I think maybe most administrations try to do this - there was an attempt to control absolutely the message", Kelly said, reflecting.

In a statement, Priebus said it had been one of the great honors of his life to serve Trump and the country.

Kelly was one of a triumvirate of officers named by Trump to key Cabinet-level positions before his introduction: Gen. James Mattis was named secretary of resistance, and Gen. Mike Flynn was named national security counsel (a position he was terminated from in February, and supplanted with Army officer H.R. McMaster).
