Spieth's Eagle Putt On 15 At 2017 Open Championship

24 Julio 2017, 04:54 | Cornelio Vivanco

Spieth completed the third leg of the career Grand Slam on Sunday by winning The Open at Royal Birkdale. Then yet another birdie on the 17th made it five-under through four holes. Kuchar played Nos. 14-17 in 2 under but was two shots behind going down the 18th fairway, where he still "took a moment and thought, 'This is an incredible thing'".

Spieth responded by nearly acing No. 14 and making birdie, rolling in a 50-foot putt for eagle on No. 15, and making a 30-foot putt across the 16th green for birdie. Spieth poured in a bomb of a putt, then told his caddie, Michael Greller, to go fetch the ball while walking off the green.

Spieth stumbled out of the blocks, making bogeys on three of the first four holes before steadying himself with a birdie on No. 5.

American Johnny Miller was the first player to make 63 in a major, when he won the 1973 U.S. Open. He also birded No. 16 to earn a two-stroke lead on Kuchar heading into the final two holes.

The shot that set the plot in motion was Spieth's wild drive on the long par-four 13th, which sailed into a nasty tangle on a hay-strewn dune.

That search made its way to the practice ground, where Spieth - after some 20 minutes of discussion with calm but confused officials - could eventually line up his third.

"I apologised profusely to Matt about the amount of time it took from when he hit his shot to when I played my second". Spieth elected iron over driver, taking bunkers out of play, before finding the heart of the green to end once and for all what had developed into a titanic battle. Spieth said Kuchar was particularly emotional in the scorer's tent just off No.18. The hole took a half-hour and when it was all said and done, the only damage was a bogey.

He still secured a best-ever finish at a major, bettering his third place at the Masters in 2012, but he could not hide his anguish at coming second.

China's Li Haotong is suddenly in the mix at the British Open.

McIlroy birdied the ninth and 11th, with the highlight of his final round at Royal Birkdale an eagle at the 17th.

Jordan Spieth has the lead as he tees off in the British Open, despite some very low scores on the day. But Saturday, Grace calmly sank a putt from a few feet away on the final hole to claim the record.

"I believe Matt Kuchar will win a major championship".

Spieth, meanwhile, was stumbling early. His birdie putt, from no more than six feet, was forced through any break and right into the back of the cup. We wondered if Spieth's nerves were beginning to play. "I've had a five-shot lead in a major and squandered it before". Spieth fired a third round 65 in flawless weather. But he stumbled out of the blocks after beginning the day with a three-shot lead.

Has a US Open title in his possession so he knows he can get it done. But he will never be more of a champion than he was on the back nine at Royal Birkdale on Sunday. Kuchar, playing in the same final group, shot a 66.

Three-quarters of the way to a career Grand Slam, he spoke about playing at The Masters the following year, looking to make history. He just ran into a buzz saw in Spieth-a slow, deliberate, annoying buzz saw.

The pair tee off at 9:30 a.m. ET. on 11Alive.

Spieth joined Jack Nicklaus as the only players to win three different majors at age 23, and even the Golden Bear was impressed. Nicklaus tweeted on Sunday afternoon. He's been close plenty of times with eight top 10 finishes. At the start, it looked like a double or triple or worse, the kind of mess that ruins major hopes. Tiger Woods was 24 when he did it at the 2000 Open.
