Federer overwhelms Cilic to clinch historic 8th Wimbledon title

He received a medical timeout at the end of the second set on the way to a 6-3 6-1 6-4 defeat in his first Wimbledon final.

Federer surpasses Pete Sampras and William Renshaw, who won their seventh titles in 2000 and 1889 respectively, with only Marina Navratilova still ahead in terms of Wimbledon singles titles on nine.

With his knee fixed and body rested after sitting out the French Open, Federer is yet to drop a set at this year's tournament.

After becoming the oldest man to win Wimbledon in the Open Era, Federer has underlined his longevity and endurance in the unforgiving field on the ATP Tour.

"I was missing more than usual, more than that the rest of the tournament".

"I totally see myself playing here this time next year", he said. So I guess people would have laughed, too, if I told them I was going to win two slams this year. In the semi-finals, he turned things around against Sam Querrey after losing the first set.

The Croat said that physiotherapists had done all they could to help him recover for the final. So I know it's going to be a huge challenge.

The Swiss maestro, appearing in his 11th Wimbledon final, was challenged early on but once he broke a nervous Cilic in the fifth game of the opening set the match became a no-contest. "But I believe I'm ready", he added.

"We tried to take some fluid out overnight and yesterday in the morning it was worse".

Adding to his Australian Open title in January, 2017 marks Federer's first multi-Slam season since 2009, and sixth overall. But it is hard to imagine even a fully-fit Cilic - admirably as he has competed this fortnight - upsetting the Swiss on his favourite court. "For me it was also important that my team believed it, as well".

"To be Wimbledon champion for an entire year now is something I can't wait to savour and enjoy".

Cilic served to open the match against Federer and both held to 2-2. Federer already held the record for the most men's Major titles previous to today's victory, with Nadal sitting in second with 15 titles.

"Obviously was very tough emotionally because I know how much I went through last few months in preparation with everything". I was more just so happy that I was able to win Wimbledon again because it's been a long road, it's been an exciting road.
