Nitish takes oath as CM, to prove majority today

After his chief ministerial term ends in 2019, Nitish Kumar will have to deal with a BJP which is suspicious of regional leaders like him. "The JD-U and BJP-led NDA joining hands to form the government is an insult to democracy", he said.

On Friday, Kumar comfortably won the crucial trust vote 131-108, after a vitriol-filled debate.

Paras is not a member of the legislative assembly.

Even as Narayanan showed reluctance in endorsing Pande's decision to invite the NDA, Kumar eventually stepped down himself even before the floor test, claiming that he had been unable to muster the required numbers. He became chief minister of Bihar two years later, with BJP support, in 2005.

BJP national spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao on Saturday said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made a decision to support the JD (U) in Bihar as the Nitish Kumar-led party was not able to deliver good governance in alliance with the RJD. Ask yourself: what has Nitish Kumar gained from breaking away from the Mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) that propelled him to power two years ago?

There was no cross-voting, the Speaker Vijay Kumar Choudhary's rejection of RJD and Congress' demand for a secret ballot ensuring that voting was strictly on party lines. Mulayam Singh Yadav, sulking for long and discreetly hoping for a call-up from Modi, senses closure of this possibility and appears eyeing for a position in an anti-BJP front. It was an unnatural alliance that died a natural death.

"Is there any charge against me in the last 20 months of impropriety during my tenure in office?..."

Manju Verma of Nitish Kumar's JD (U) was the lone woman minister to be sworn in. "We will work together in the remaining 40 months and take Bihar on the path of development", he told reporter.

He, however, on Thursday, took oath as Bihar chief minister for the sixth time, marking a historic transition of the state from a Grand Alliance government to an NDA regime. It was believed that he might be the face of Grand Alliance in next general elections. Even if the BJP falls short of a majority in 2019, Narendra Modi, not Nitish Kumar, will be its PM. "Bihar's voters feel cheated and dishonoured", he said. He added that Nitish also knew that with just 16.8 per cent vote share that he managed in the 2015 assembly polls, his options to rule Bihar on his own are limited.

People started wrapping their heads around what had happened. "We will go to the public and tell them the truth", he said.

The petitioners had requested for an early hearing, before the trust vote, but the court ordered the matter to be listed for Monday. Mr Modi said Bihar would be put on high growth trajectory as the NDA was in power both at the Centre and also in the state.

Political analysts opine that Congress, unlike in Bihar, where it refused to intervene despite being part of the alliance, must take corrective measures to prove its stand against corruption. This was Nitish Kumar's second mistake, for he ignored the possibility that the hero/villain of the RJD's "jungle raj" in Bihar may ultimately be his nemesis. The 40-odd Sushil Modi press conferences and a slew of raids on Lalu Prasad Yadav and his family have worked perfectly to served a three-fold objective: Bihar is secured and the plight of Lalu has instilled the fear of the CBI, the Enforcement Directorate and the IT department in the already weak hearts of Akhilesh, his father and Mayawati.
