More White House drama as Trump replaces Reince Priebus

Scaramucci, who was himself only appointed to his position last week, suggested that Priebus convinced Trump not to give him a White House position.

Some speculated that Scaramucci was being groomed to take over for Priebus after Trump made it clear that he would not be reporting to the chief of staff, as is the tradition.

Before the news was announced, Mr Trump had praised Mr Kelly, a former four star general who served three tours in Iraq, during a speech in New York's Long Island where he was talking about the fight against gang crime.

"John Kelly is a great American". He also hinted that Priebus leaked his personal financial disclosure information, when in fact the information had been obtained via a public records request. Secretary Kelly is an outstanding leader who has served his country honorably and I know he will do an excellent job at the White House. When I left the Marines, I never thought I would find as committed, as professional, as patriotic a group of individuals. He says he was wrong.

FILE - In this May 17, 2017, file photo, President Donald Trump talks with Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly during commencement exercises at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. Trump named Kelly as his new Chief of Staff on July 28, ousting Reince Priebus.

State Rep. Samantha Kerkman, R-Salem Lakes, is a longtime friend of Priebus.

Priebus, a Wisconsin native, joined the administration as chief of staff after a almost six-year tenure as chairman of the RNC, the final months of which he spent in a dual role as a top adviser to Trump's campaign. "Thank goodness we have CBP people that are doing this job, '" Kelly said.

"John has done a spectacular job at Homeland Security. I used to think, when I'd go to all of my trips up to Bethesda, Walter Reed, I'll go to the funerals with the secretaries of defense, that I could somehow imagine what it would be like", Kelly said.

Trump loyalists had chafed at Priebus, feeling he had installed his RNC allies at the White House and overlooked the people close to Trump who helped get him elected president in November.

In pushing out Spicer and Priebus and by installing his alter ego Scaramucci, Trump has shown that what he really desires is an administration of yes-men and yes-women. They also began to anticipate what more Trump might do to slow down or shut down the investigation, and are now planning their response to a potential firing of or resignation by Sessions, and intend to thwart the possible firing of special counsel Bob Mueller. Whereas the other two short timers on the Chief of Staff list served at the end of their president's term, Priebus is the first to be jettisoned so early from the start of a presidential term. "Reince is a good man", Trump said.

The meteoric rise of Scaramucci, who predicted the exit of Priebus in his now infamous conversation with New Yorker reporter Ryan Lizza, is further evidenced by the fact that he apparently will not report to Trump's new chief of staff, John Kelly, as is customary, but to the president directly. "He's a great American", he added.

"I have been fortunate to have served my country for more than 45 years - first as a Marine and then as the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security", he said.

Kelly's ability to succeed will depend on factors outside his control, including whether Trump's squabbling staff is willing to put aside the rivalries that have sowed disorder and complicated efforts to enact policy.

Mr Trump brought his Wall Street buddy and entrepreneur Mr Scaramucci into the White House team last week, to revamp the White House communications department.

Trump also thanked Priebus for his service.
