Johnson blames 'dysfunctional process' for failed Obamacare repeal vote

US Senate rejects Obamacare repeal deciding vote cast by Republican McCain

Brooks urged Senate Republicans not to quit pushing to repeal and replace ObamaCare, but he said that if they're willing to quit, maybe some Republicans should quit too.

The Senate this week tried and failed on several measures to pass legislation to repeal and replace ObamaCare, dealing Trump a major loss in his efforts to end the 2010 health care law. Some Republican senators had been concerned that the House would simply pass the "skinny bill" and send it to Trump. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Sen.

Trump has drilled into Republicans that they should take anything they can get when it comes to repealing Obamacare.

President Trump responded in an early morning tweet. "Americans deserve far better than their elected officials have delivered to this point".

Sen. John McCain cast the deciding "no" vote, producing gasps of surprise in the chamber. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Vice President Mike Pence were seen before the vote speaking with McCain, but the senator stuck with his "no", effectively ending the bill.

While the contents of this bill are still secret, the legislation would apparently repeal Obamacare's requirements that individuals have health insurance and that employers provide insurance to their workers, while leaving other pieces of Obamacare in place.

"Last night was an incredible moment, and the credit goes to a lot of people, but at the top of the list are the three who showed awesome courage to resist the pressure and do what's good for the country", Schumer said.

While both Republican and Democratic lawmakers spent a lot of energy trying to convince John McCain to vote with them, Democrats could rest assured that Murkowski and Collins would not waver in their opposition.

News quickly spread of the 49-51 vote for the "skinny repeal" not to be enacted.

The Congressional Budget Office has estimated the various Republican health care proposals would increase the number of uninsured people by anywhere from 16 million to 23 million. Speaker Paul Ryan had to personally promise at least four GOP senators that he wouldn't allow the bill to become law without going to House-Senate conference to make additional changes. As I said from the beginning, let ObamaCare implode, then deal. The repeal would "scale back" some of more controversial issues of the Obamacare plan.

"Neither party has a monopoly on good ideas, and we must work together to put together a bipartisan bill that fixes the flaws in the ACA and works for all Americans", Collins said, in a statement.
