Johnny Miller compliments Branden Grace's 62 on 'really, really easy' setup

China's Li Haotong celebrates on the 18th during the final round of the British Open Golf Championship at Royal Birkdale Southport England Sunday

He ended up shooting 82 and 84 over the weekend to finish last among the players to make the cut, but he also won the China Open past year when still just 20 and represented his country at the Olympics in Rio. You know, I was just so in the zone of playing, hole after hole. I was just trying to play the round without a bogey and make another birdie at the last.

Grace said he had not had any idea he was on a record pace. He began the day in 45th place, and finished it in third.

But after finding a heavy lie in the rough on the first and failing to get up and down from left of the green, Spieth's lead was down to a single shot when Kuchar's superb approach to the second set up a tap-in birdie. Dufner shot a 66.

The giant 39-year-old had seven birdies, but also a bogey at the short 4th hole and a double-bogey at 16 after finding a bunker from the tee.

South African Charl Schwartzel, a former Masters champion, found conditions tough and said it was "no fun".

Grace, whose caddie told him of the record after he holed out at the last, added: "I feel I´m playing well". I've never played in front of that sort of crowd at all over the years. He defended the course with, "There's a lot of spots you want to keep out of, and I did that today".

Many men, 31 to be exact, had shot 63 - the first being Johnny Miller in the final round of the 1973 U.S. Open at Oakmont, where he won his first major title.

"So it [Augusta 2016] was a humbling experience that I thought at the time could serve me well going forward".

"Talking about this can go on forever", Grace said.

"I'm going to need to shoot probably nine-under, I would imagine".

"I think he did".

It was the first time in history, a major feat, but Branden Grace was so into his golf game that he didn't realize he was about to do something that no other golfer has ever done while playing a major championship game.

While Brandon's game was a jaw-dropper in the world of golf on Saturday, he wasn't anxious about going for that record at the time he made that final shot.

"It's really a dream come true", he said after signing his card.

Asked how it was possible not to know the significance of his round, Grace replied: "I honestly didn't".

"I had 145 yards into a slight breeze, so I hit a really solid 9-iron and it didn't get any better than that", he explained with some modesty.

The 29-year-old started with a birdie on the first hole before four more birdies to turn in 29 on the par 34 outward loop.
