Jaguar launches new E-Pace with world record-breaking barrel roll

Jaguar E Pace front

Unlike the F-Pace SUV, the E-Pace has only been announced with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gas engine for our market. Like Porsche, Alfa Romeo and Maserati, Jaguar is a sports-car brand that is finding success translating its performance DNA to a broader luxury demographic hungry for utility vehicles.

Despite Jaguar's dangerously similar naming scheme, don't confuse this vehicle with the all-electric Jaguar I-Pace, as the E-Pace doesn't sip electrons. There's also a diesel option. An Active Driveline system on the more powerful version does the same, but can also send power exclusively to the front wheels during steady cruising. The optional Adaptive Dynamic suspension is available featuring a triple tube design with an externally mounted hydraulic valve that controls the damping. Interestingly, Jaguar calls the E-Pace a "compact performance SUV" in the latest release.

A key part of what separates the E-Pace from the bigger F-Pace is the fact that it was inspired by Jaguar's flagship sports vehicle, the F-Type. Those include stylized taillights with chicane design that wrap around the rear quarter panel in a narrow band of light. In addition to the more powerful 296-horsepower 2.0-liter engine, the E-Pace R-Dynamic models offer a more sophisticated active driveline that can send nearly all the engine torque to either front or rear axles in extreme conditions.

Jaguar E Pace interior

Ditching this for a conventional stick feels as much a cost-cutting measure as a subtle way of letting E-Pace buyers know what luxuries await them further up the Jaguar foodchain.

Inside, the dashboard is recognisably Jaguar with a large central touch screen, three climate dials below, and mood lighting flooding the door pockets and foot wells.

The Jaguar E-PACE combines the sporty looks and driving abilities you'd expect from Jag with the futuristic interior and space you'd be surprised to find in such a compact and sporty vehicle.

Since it shares common architecture with both the Land Rover Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque Jaguar engineers, at the unveiling, were keen to draw attention to the huge engineering changes involved in ensuring the E-PACE drives like a Jag.

Lane-keeping assistance, driver fatigue detection, traffic-sign recognition, autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot warning and a system that detects oncoming traffic when pulling out of junctions are among the available safety systems, while a bonnet airbag will help protect pedestrians should the worst happen.

With practicality for modern life in mind, there are four USB ports, a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot for up to eight devices and storage specifically created to hold phones or music players.

New tech like a head-up display that's claimed to be 66 per cent brighter and more than twice the size of other conventional systems will make its debut in the E-PACE.

With a 105.6-inch wheelbase and a 173.0-inch overall length, the E-Pace is a fairly small cat in stature that straddles the territory between the compact and subcompact segments. Other neat treats include an optional 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster that's customizable and can almost fill the screen with a navigation display, much like Audi's Virtual Cockpit.

The E-Pace, which goes on sale in Australia in April next year, was shown for the first time in an overnight reveal in London. This will be exclusively for Chinese customers and the auto will go on sale in China in 2018. Prices will start at $39,595 for the Core range, $48,245 for the R-Dynamic range, and $54,545 for the First Edition.

It's the 10-inch touchscreen sitting atop the center console which is the main talking point here, mainly due to the fact that it comes as standard on all E-Pace models, rather than being a pricey optional extra.
