Donald Trump pledged Tuesday morning that the nation will eventually have a working substitute for the teetering Obamacare system, hours after a prohibitive number of Republican senators withdrew from a plan to replace it.
Replacement plan efforts died when four senators said they would vote no on the revised Better Care Reconciliation Act, a replacement plan that took two months to craft.
If Senate Republicans can't round up the votes to repeal the health care law, they have several options.
This failure is proof "that the core of this bill is unworkable", said top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer. But it's all about trying to make sure that we fulfill those campaign promises, and I'm still very confident that we will get it done.
At the time, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimated that the repeal would lead to 18 million people losing their health insurance in the first year following enactment of the bill, with premiums increasing 20 to 25 percent.
"Were going to find out if there's hypocrisy in the United States Senate in the next few days I'm afraid", said Sen. He said that with such a plan, "Democrats are going to come to us".
"I don't know where any of my colleagues will go", he said.
To avoid a repeat of this week's failure, Trump said he would work hard to elect more Republicans to the Senate in 2018 to increase the GOP majority. Some, including U.S. Rep. Jeff Duncan, R-Laurens, called for a full repeal of Obamacare without a replacement plan.
Herman Cain had some harsh words for those who are calling for lawmakers to come together to fix ObamaCare.
"It's also shown us some of the limits of legislating with an inexperienced president in the White House and an unpopular president in the White House", said Molly Reynolds of the Washington-based Brookings Institution.
