Graham Norton Comes Third On BBC Pay Chart
Evans, who presents the network's breakfast show, was paid between £2.2 million and £2.25 million in 2016/2017, while Claudia Winkleman, the BBC's highest-paid female celebrity, earned between £400,000 and £450,000.
You might have some serious respect for Chris Evans' agent, given the star's earning around £2.2 million a year from the BBC as their top-paid talent, until you realise that US TV personality Dr Phil earns some $88m a year.
He said that the BBC "always try to pay people at a discount to the market" and are "not afraid to walk away if money becomes an issue". Surprisingly, rounding out the top five radio presenters - after Chris Evans, Steve Wright and Grimmy - are Vanessa Feltz and Simon Mayo, who both earn the same as the Radio 1 presenter.
The next highest paid female is the One Show'sAlex Jones at £400,000, closely followed by newsreader and presenter Fiona Bruce at £350,000.
After arguing that it should only have to reveal salaries only of "stars" earning more than £450,000, the BBC battled to delay publication of the list so as to buy time to even up the "gender pay gap" and move staff off its books.
Many soap stars also made the list with Casualty and EastEnders dominating the highest-earning actors.
There are no Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic (BAME) stars featured in the list of 24 staff earning over £300,000. With such eye-wateringly huge sums, it leaves the person in the street wondering what stars used to be paid, and if rates really are higher in the commercial tv space, what on earth are those guys on?
This would certainly be something we would take up very strongly with the BBC when the director general and the chairman appear before the select committee in the autumn.
He acknowledged, however, there is "more to do".
Elsewhere, the BBC's fresh figures reveal that Match of the Day pundit Gary Lineker earns a whopping £1.75 - £1.8 million per annum.
Overall, about two thirds of the 96 top-earners were men, sparking the gender pay gap row. We also want to see it tackled. And it's already having an impact. "Talent salaries and wages will round upwards, they won't go down".
"It's an important thing that licence fee payers know where their money is going".
Tennis legend John McEnroe, a presenter and commentator on the BBC's Wimbledon team, was paid £150,000 to £199,999 but Martina Navratilova did not make the list. However, it is well-known that Norton's annual pay check exceeds £2 million, with the rest coming from the production company for his chat show.
"The average gender pay gap for the United Kingdom is just over 18%, our figure is 10%".
The BBC's total talent bill was cut by more than £4m over the past financial year to £194m, according to the organisation.
