There is probably no more popular player, but sport isn't a popularity contest and this one will sting badly, even if he insisted, predictably, there were no excuses. Rose said. "That was 19 years ago".
He does not celebrate his 24th birthday until next Thursday and is the youngest victor of the Claret Jug since the late Spaniard Seve Ballesteros triumphed at Royal Lytham in 1979 aged 22. Defying the Golfing Gods, the young Texan took a swig from the famed trophy despite being told it was bad luck to do so.
More than 235,000 fans attended this week's event at Royal Birkdale, surpassing the mark of 230,000 at Royal Liverpool in 2006, when Tiger Woods won the title.
Soon after Branden Grace had recorded the first 62 in the history of men's major championship golf, it seemed as if the powerful American, after rattling in five birdies in the first 10 holes, could well match, if not surpass, the South African. If ever there was a good bogey to have this was it. "Definitely a couple of shots there (went missing) on the last couple of holes".
The 2017 Open Championship is down to its final round and Jordan Spieth is moving himself away from the rest of the field. He lost it around the turn, making back-to-back bogeys, and then a double bogey at No. 10 when he blasted out of one pot bunker left of the fairway and it spun toward another, resting in the thick collar.

Spieth responded by nearly acing No. 14 and making birdie, rolling in a 50-foot putt for eagle on No. 15, and making a 30-foot putt across the 16th green for birdie. But while Spieth held his nerve to register to one last birdie from further out on the last shot of the day, Kuchar lost his.
No matter what he goes on to achieve in his career, Spieth is adamant that golf will never be the most important thing in his life.
A raking eagle putt from some 40-feet on the next thrust him back into the lead.
Another long putt for birdie on the 16th was a magical encore.
Spieth sliced his tee shot more than 60 yards right, over a tall sand dune near the driving range.
Kuchar clawed one back with a brilliant up-and-down from the sand for birdie at 17 which Spieth could not match from the same trap, and the pair provided a grandstand finish as Spieth holed from 20 feet for birdie at the last after Kuchar came close to holing his approach, but he was unable to convert the chance from six feet.
Spieth recounted his St Andrews experience moments after being presented with the Claret Jug for the first time.
"Words fail me", Johnson said. "And I didn't. And that would have put me a bit closer to the lead going out today and maybe it would have - maybe I would have been able to put a bit of pressure on the guys in front of me". "It feels good to have this in my hands".
US Open champion Brooks Koepka, who had shared the lead with Spieth and Kuchar after the first round, remains in contention following an eventful 68 that left him 5-under for the championship.
NASCAR 2017: Kyle Busch on pole going for three straight at Indy
Over the last ten races at Indianapolis , Busch and Juan Pablo Montoya are the only drivers to lead more than 100 laps in a race. When the track opened for Xfinity practice Friday, Busch's vehicle was near the top again - even with restrictor-plate motors.
Texas ex Jordan Spieth conquers The Open
The leading South African was Branden Grace, who finished tied for sixth on four-under-par after shooting even-par 70 on Sunday. Grace said it was just a special day at Royal Birkdale , where the winds were calm and the scoring conditions flawless .
White House Signals Acceptance of Russia Sanctions Bill
He touched on a frequent criticism President Donald Trump makes towards the news media, which he often refers to as "fake news". White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci is scrubbing his Twitter feed of any tweets that oppose Trump's agenda.
Jordan Spieth Wins the British Open, His Third Major Title
With both Spieth and Kuchar stuttering, McIlroy will be rueing the missed opportunities he had to close the gap on the two. Grace said he was trying to finish the round without a bogey and wanted to make one final birdie on the last hole.
