The final of the six ascents on the menu of the 214.5 kilometers (133 miles) stage between Pau and the ski station was too hard for Froome, who had worn the yellow jersey over the previous seven stages.

Since the 2015 race began, he has worn it in precisely half of the 54 stages, the same amount of time as every other cyclist in the world combined. It has turned into the tightest yellow jersey battle in Tour history.

Froome looked imperious in his three Tour victories in 2013, 2015 and previous year, never giving his rivals a chance.

"It would be a great satisfaction for us to have a French victor of the Tour de France".

Bardet won the stage ahead of Rigoberto Uran and Aru, who seized the race lead from Froome by six seconds according provisional results. "It's close. It's going to be a great fight now all the way to Paris".

Aru now leads Froome by six seconds, with Bardet just 25 seconds behind.

Meintjes was just seven seconds off the pace as the host nation's Romain Bardet conquered the mountainous 214.5-kilometre stage between Pau and Peryagudes.

Froome finished a lowly seventh, 22 seconds behind the Frenchman, who took 10 bonus seconds for the stage win.

According to Gregor Brown at Cycling Weekly, Chris Froome of Team Sky is expecting an aggressive start to the race, particularly from Trek-Segafredo's Alberto Contador.

"It was certainly a tough day for me at the end", said Froome.

"It's more enjoyable. We've been at this race for so long where all we do is defend, defend, defend, defend".

Martin, who moved into fifth on GC, surprised himself given he is still struggling with back soreness after being caught up in the Stage 9 crash that took out Richie Porte.

Kittel made it two wins in two days following his win in Bergerac 24 hours earlier, extending his dominance of the sprint stages in this year's Tour.

"I gained only a few seconds but I'm sure it'll count at the end", said Yates, who retained the white jersey for the Tour's best young rider.

"We've lost the yellow jersey by some seconds, so it's not a disaster, but it still hurts", said Sky sports director Nico Portal. "I said before the start it would be good if a Frenchman won".

"Mikel was a way off overall, but I can't follow everybody when they attack, I'll give him less room for manoeuvre from now on", Aru commented.
