American Spieth emerges from epic duel to win British Open

After Kuchar, Brooks Koepka and Austin Connely are tied at 5-under-par. What a great champion Matt is and a class act.
Make no mistake, the wheels had started to come off - but what a response from Jordan Spieth, who now has three Majors to his name. Nicklaus tweeted during a wild back nine.
Aside from a brief blip on the front nine Sunday, Spieth's putting was phenomenal all week.
It could hardly have come at a better time after his nightmare at the 13th when he ended up dropping a shot after playing into brambles and havugn to hit his recovery off the driving range. Spieth elected iron over driver, taking bunkers out of play, before finding the heart of the green to end once and for all what had developed into a titanic battle.
Towards the finish, it was a question of who would hold his nerve better - Spieth or Matt Kuchar.
After two fine shots to find the heart of the par-4 16th, Spieth once again got hot with the putter and poured it home for birdie and a two-shot cushion, before birdies were exchanged from 10 feet for Kuchar and five feet for Spieth at the par-5 17th. Spieth would have been facing a double- or even triple-bogey and nearly no shot of winning the tournament. Now he has won the first three legs of a Grand Slam before the age of 24 the way Nicklaus did. "My last goal now is to try to complete a career grand slam". He closed with a par for one-under 69 and the admiration of the golfing world. He just had no answers for Spieth's final blitz.
With a three shot lead and the consistency he has shown over the last three days, it will hard to hunt down the former world number one. Seventeen pars and a birdie would have been fine, too.
Haotong Li finished in third place at six-under after carding a magnificent 63 on the final day.
The Holywood golfer had five bogeys to show for his first six holes on Friday but showed tremendous resilience to fight back to finish five under, seven shots behind the victor, Spieth. He scrambled for bogey at No. 13 an trailed Kuchar by one heading to the par-4 14th.
Birkdale sets attendance record for major in England
But while Spieth held his nerve to register to one last birdie from further out on the last shot of the day, Kuchar lost his. The 2017 Open Championship is down to its final round and Jordan Spieth is moving himself away from the rest of the field.

Corey Seager and Chase Utley hit solo home runs as the Dodgers snapped a two-game losing streak that saw them outscored 18-6. Freddie Freeman and Tyler Flowers also homered for Atlanta, which has won seven of its last nine away from SunTrust Park.
Spieth Finishes Strongly To Win Open
To add a claret jug to his collection, Spieth overcame bogeys on three of his first four holes Sunday at Royal Birkdale. So disturbed was Spieth that he nearly aced the next hole, then canned a serpentine 40-foot putt for eagle on No. 15.
