O.J. Simpson listens as his defense attorney, Ozzie Fumo, questions witness David Cook during an evidentiary hearing in Clark County District Court, May 16, 2013, in Las Vegas.

Nevada Department of Corrections spokeswoman Brooke Keast said that Simpson, who shares a bunk and toilet with a cellmate, works in the prison gym, where he cleans equipment and mops floors.

Simpson will have a video conference with the Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners Thursday at 1 p.m. The testimony will be public but the commission's deliberation and vote will be private; the information they'll base their decision on won't be made public before the hearing. If parole is denied, a rehearing date would be set by the panel.

If the hearing goes in his favor, Simpson would be eligible for parole on October 1.

Plus, the parole board sided with him once before. One board seat is vacant, with a new appointee yet to be sworn in.

Others involved in Thursday's hearing have varying ties to the former football, TV and movie star who was acquitted of murder in 1995 in Los Angeles but convicted of armed robbery in Las Vegas in 2008.

Simpson needs all four board members to rule in his favor.

There's also an 11-category risk assessment for judging what risk Simpson might pose to the public.

A Goldman family spokesman said Ron Goldman's father and sister, Fred and Kim, won't be part of Simpson's parole hearing but that they felt apprehensive about "how this will change their lives again should Simpson be released".

Those rankings include everything from sex where men are automatically assigned a one and women a zero to the age when they first committed a crime.

Repeated misconduct can earn 2 points, while a clean record for a year can subtract 1 point.

Simpson would at times get teased about the killings and trial, former guards Jesse Mandoki and Jeffrey Felix recalled. Simpson is expected to go free, due to good behavior during the nine years he's been incarcerated, but according to a former corrections officer, his chances were nearly endangered over a cookie. The board's decision left Simpson with four years to serve before reaching his minimum time behind bars.

The parole hearing is expected to last 15 to 20 minutes which means WSFA 12 News at Noon will not air in its entirety. Simpson's ultimate release date - without parole or further infractions - is now set for September 2022, though it can fluctuate based on time earned.
